The Five Superpowers of Consultants: Curiosity
This article is a collaboration with Cécile. In her publication, Colleague, Interrupted, she helps you be the best version of yourself and get promoted faster without losing your mind.
Previously, Cécile and I introduced the five consulting superpowers through our SCALE framework. SCALE stands for Synthesis, Curiosity, Adaptability, Leadership and Engagement and aims to fast-track your career growth: in our experience, these are the skills that separate people who present information from those who move outcomes.
It is now time to continue with superpower number 2: Curiosity (catch our previous article on Synthesis here).
You know the scene:
Everyone’s talking, but no one’s really engaging.
The team debates timelines and outputs, yet no one stops to ask, “What are we missing?”
Silence follows every tricky question. The room feels tidy, but not alive.
People are nodding, not contributing.
Curiosity helps you move past these blockers. When problems feel vague or conversations stall, it pushes you to ask sharper questions and pay closer attention. Used strategically, curiosity turns uncertainty into clarity by revealing what’s really happening beneath the surface. With that understanding, you can make better decisions and identify logical next steps even in complex situations or environments.
At its core, Curiosity is three muscles working together: precision in language (using words that cut through noise), active listening (reading between the lines and steering in real time) and going with the flow (knowing when to push, pause or pivot).

What you’ll get (and use today)
We created a Playbook you can deploy immediately to maximise the insights you capture from conversations as well as how others perceive you. We built this because we wish someone had handed it to us 10 years ago.
Our aim is to help you rediscover that effortless curiosity we all had as children — the instinct to explore, question and make sense of everything around us.
The Playbook includes the practical pieces of advice you really need - no fluff, just the tools to deliver clarity under pressure:
Consulting-tuned AI prompt to help you sharpen your language and improve clarity, precision and tone.
A cue card for the LSP method (Listen, Summarise, Probe), a technique for making your curiosity useful in real time.
Factsheets + Upskilling Journeys for precision in language, active listening and going with the flow, so you know what “good” looks like and how to climb.
BONUS Curiosity wheel with EIGHT questioning styles and examples, to help you pick the best approach based on whether you need to clarify facts, expand possibilities or provoke action.
Time to value: 30–60 minutes. Just read the sections that are most relevant to you, start playing with the resources and save the upskilling journeys for later reflection or your next performance review.
Who Can Benefit From Our Playbook
Our tips, though derived from consulting, can be applied by anyone who is expected to operate in high-stakes, ambiguous situations.
You might be a strategist, a product lead, an internal advisor or a chief of staff. You might be mid-career and looking to sharpen your edge, or just getting started and wondering why everyone else seems to “get it” already.
A quick before/after
Here’s how things change when you have mastered curiosity:
🚮 Before:
You walk into a meeting ready to prove you know the answer.
You listen just enough to confirm your view.
Everyone leaves feeling aligned, but nothing new was learned.
🚀 After:
You walk in to understand, not defend.
You listen for what’s missing, not what matches.
New connections emerge — and so does a path no one saw before.
If that shift is what you need, this is your Playbook.
Use it on the work in front of you today - and tell us about your before/after. We love a good transformation.
